About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and entrepreneurial Steel Trader to spearhead our market entry and expansion into Mozambique. This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned professional to build our business from the ground up, leveraging our existing supplier relationships and industry expertise while developing new customer networks in one of Africa's fastest-growing economies. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in establishing our brand, capturing market share, and positioning us as a trusted steel supplier to Mozambique.
Key Responsibilities
Market Development & Sales
- Identify and develop relationships with construction companies, infrastructure developers, distributors, and fabricators in Mozambique
- Build a comprehensive understanding of steel demand across key sectors including construction, mining, energy, and manufacturing
- Develop sales strategies for different product lines and customer segments
- Prepare competitive quotations and tender submissions for major projects
- Maintain existing customer relationships and provide technical support on steel specifications
Logistics & Supply Chain Management
- Manage customs clearance procedures and ensure compliance with Mozambican import regulations
- Arrange inland transportation and delivery to customer sites across Mozambique
- Monitor vessel schedules, demurrage, and optimize container/bulk shipment arrangements
- Manage warehousing and inventory levels to meet market demand
Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure all import documentation including bills of lading, packing lists, certificates of origin, and mill test certificates are accurate and complete
- Ensure steel products meet required quality standards and specifications
- Stay updated on Mozambican customs duties, VAT, and import regulations affecting steel trade
Financial & Risk Management
- Monitor currency exchange rates (MZN, USD, EUR) and hedge forex exposure where appropriate
- Manage credit risk with customers and suppliers
- Prepare pricing models accounting for landed costs, duties, and market conditions
- Maintain profitability targets while remaining competitive in the market
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 4-6 years of experience in steel trading, preferably with focus on Mozambican, Angola will be a plus
- Strong knowledge of steel products, specifications, and international quality standards (ASTM, BS, EN, JIS)
- Proven track record of exporting steel into Mozambique
- Fluency in Portuguese and English (written and spoken)
Essential Skills
- Deep understanding of steel industry dynamics, pricing mechanisms, and global supply chains
- Excellent negotiation skills with both suppliers and customers
- Strong knowledge of Incoterms (CFR, CIF, FOB) and international shipping procedures
- Experience with Mozambican ports (Maputo, Beira, Nacala) and customs procedures
- Proficiency in trade finance and payment instruments
- Strong numerical and analytical skills for pricing and margin management
- Excellent relationship-building and customer service skills
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple shipments simultaneously
Preferred Experience
- Existing customer base in Mozambique's construction and infrastructure sectors
- Knowledge of major infrastructure projects and developments in Mozambique
- Experience with both containerized and bulk steel shipments
- Understanding of steel fabrication and technical requirements
- Familiarity with Mozambican tax regulations and import duty structures
Technical Knowledge
- Understanding of different steel grades and their applications
- Knowledge of quality control procedures and mill test certificate interpretation
- Awareness of anti-dumping duties and trade remedies affecting steel imports
- Understanding of logistics challenges specific to Mozambican ports and infrastructure
