How to get what you want

I wantThis is not a post about some magic formula that can guarantee you get everything your heart desires- and before we go any further, here’s a secret: There is no shortcut to getting what you want.

To get what you want in life, be it a hilltop mansion, Lamborghini Gallardo, to see the 7 wonders of the world, to write a book or merely to ensure your kids have a good future, you have to work to get these things.

Hard work is the first step to getting what you want.
Make goals, and be utterly determined to achieve them.

The second step to getting what you want is telling people
“I want you to spend more time with me” is a simple example. Telling people you are going to be the next Richard Branson is a more complicated one. Remember the more reward you are aiming for, and the more complex your goal, the more time it is going to take to attain it. You can’t expect to commit yourself to being a millionaire and expecting this to happen overnight.

Be patient and determined enough to see your goal through.
Bigger goals take longer and have more obstacles to overcome- be unwavering in your commitment to getting what you want. Many people have given up at the last hurdle; when success was just around the corner- keep pushing!

Believe in your goal with every fibre of your being.
Lewis Pugh – the Human Polar Bear – swam one kilometre in the polar seas. He came to speak to us and said that if he did not have the unshakeable belief he was going to complete the swim, he almost certainly wouldn’t have. You cannot be in two minds about what you want, one telling you that you will achieve and the other preaching failure.

You cannot be in two minds about what you want, one telling you that you will achieve and the other preaching failure.

You have to commit in word, thought and deed to getting what you want.

The last two steps to getting what you want are ensuring you surround yourself with people that can help you get what you want- not necessarily investors or business partners, but people who can help you commit in word, thought and deed. People, who will support you emotionally, people who encourage you, collaborators, life partners- everyone who cares about you should care as much about your goals.

The final step is to ensure you are in an environment where you can commit to getting what you want. If you spend all your time covering mistakes or trying to catch up on what you haven’t done, all you are doing is standing still. You need to focus on your goals and be 100% in the zone.

I challenge you to commit to getting what you want out of 2013!
